September 4, 2009. Durango, CO. - The Fort Lewis College Volleyball team was finally able to celebrate earlier today as they beat the undefeated Red Storm of Dixie State 3-1 despite senior setter Melissa Childs injuring her knee. The Skyhawks were forced to make a big change in their line-up losing their veteran setter. Both sophomore Jordan Squiers and junior Adriana Saiz stepped up and filled the position.
Fort Lewis made quick work in the first set defeating Dixie 25-19. Fired up from the first set, the Red Storm came out and took the second set 15-25. The third set was back and forth but the Skyhawks came up with a few mor big plays to take the third set 25-20. The final set was a flat out battle consisting of long rallies and several lead changes. However, the Skyhawks dug deep to pull out a 28-26 set four victory and first win on the season.
The Skyhawks were led by junior Chelsea Flaming with 17 kills, followed by Taylor Hilberry with 13 and Jessica Wilson with 12. Squiers finished with 18 assists and Saiz finished with a team high of 28. Iris Frye recorded 17 digs in the game.
Skyhawks now 1-5 will take on Cal Poly Pomona at 6 p.m. later tonight.
